Will your dog answer to it?
Nothing you pick leaves this page — the filters, the shortlist and the share link all run in your browser. The “Easy to call” tag marks names of one or two syllables that end in a vowel and don’t rhyme with a training cue; the warning on a card names the cue it clashes with. Both are spelling checks you can see for yourself, not claims about what your dog hears.

Why working names are one syllable
British sheep farms have used the same handful of names for generations: Cap, Nell, Jess, Moss, Fly, Bess, Gyp, Shep, Glen, Kep, Spot. They are not short out of thrift. A name you have to send uphill into wind, over a hundred metres, between whistle commands, has to land in one beat and sound like nothing else you say.
That is the same logic behind gundog names: Flush, Drake, Teal, Bay, Mark, Buck. Short, distinct, and nothing like "sit" or "come" — which is exactly what the clash check on each card is testing for.
Names from the job, not the breed
The working list splits in two. Stock names come from the trade itself: Drover, Heeler, Shep, Laddie, Tess. Gundog names come from the quarry and the field: Mallard, Pintail, Woodcock, Grouse, Quail, Covey, Bugle, Scent, Ridge.
A few names in here have a documented history worth knowing. Balto and Togo both ran the 1925 serum relay to Nome, Alaska — Balto led the final leg and got the statue in Central Park; Togo ran the longest and hardest stretch. Argos is the dog in the Odyssey who recognises Odysseus after twenty years. Bran and Sceolan are Fionn mac Cumhaill's two hounds in Irish legend.
The names in this group that clash with a cue
Not disqualifying — you can keep the name and use a different word for that behaviour. But it is worth knowing on day one rather than in week three:
Scout rhymes with “out”
Bay rhymes with “stay”
FAQ
Hunting & working dog names, answered
On British sheep farms: Cap, Nell, Jess, Moss, Fly, Bess, Gyp, Shep, Glen, Spot. All one syllable, all distinct from the whistle and voice commands used alongside them.
Because they are used at distance and under noise, alongside a set of cues that are also short. A one-beat name that rhymes with nothing in the cue list is the whole requirement — and it is the requirement the tool checks.
Yes, and they are among the most practical names on the site. The qualities that make Cap or Jess work on a hillside — short, clear, no clash — are the same ones that make recall easier in a park.

Named them. Now about all that barking
A name is the one word in the conversation that comes from you. For the rest of it, Dog & Cat Translator Pro plays a bark or meow back when you speak or tap — a bit of fun, not a decoder.
