Dog age calculator

Dog years to human years by size — then the life stage. Saves your pet on this device.

Adult size

Mid-size — Border Collie, Beagle, Cocker Spaniel

3 dog years

29human years

Life stage: Adult

Past the first two years and not yet in the senior window for this size. Day-to-day needs are usually steadier.

DNA-clock reference (Labrador study cited by AKC): about 49 human years — 16 × ln(age) + 31. Not size-adjusted.

Changes save in your browser — nothing is sent to our servers

Math: year 1 = 15 human years, year 2 adds 9, then about 5 per year — the medium-dog guideline on the AKC dog-years page. Size changes the senior label, not a private number grid (AKC does not publish one on that page). Estimate only — not vet advice.

Dog Translator

Got the human years — now answer in barks

The number alone sits on the screen. Open Dog & Cat Translator Pro, speak or tap, and play a bark or meow back while that life stage is fresh — a 2-year-old and a senior hear the same toy differently. Entertainment only; it does not decode a real bark.

After the math, talk back

Keep the life stage in mind, then open the app on your iPhone. Speak a line or tap a ready sound — it plays dog- and cat-like sounds back in real time. That is the whole loop: calculator for age, app for a playful reply. Free to download on iOS 16 or newer; key sound features need the $9.99/year subscription shown in the App Store before you pay.

Why size and age both matter

Flat ×7 math treats a Chihuahua and a Great Dane the same. They are not. On the AKC dog-years page, year one lands near 15 human years for a medium dog, year two adds about 9, and later years add about 5. The same page notes larger dogs often hit “senior” earlier than small ones. This tool follows that split: one published number path, a size-aware stage label.

Want the reverse? Use the Human → dog tab. It back-solves the same 15 / +9 / +5 path so “40 human years” becomes a calendar age you can compare to your dog.

Pair the stage with reading the dog in front of you. Soft eyes and a loose body still beat any number — start with our dog body language guide, or skim why dogs stare and why dogs whine when the noise changes with age.

Senior or puppy — reply in their sounds

You already know the stage. Next time they bark or whine, open Dog & Cat Translator Pro and tap a reply instead of guessing into the void. Same entertainment toy either way — it plays sounds; it does not age-track your pet.

Frequently asked questions

Pick your dog’s adult size, then the age in years and months. The tool converts that age with the AKC/AVMA medium-dog guideline: about 15 human years for year one, 9 more for year two, then about 5 human years for each year after. Size changes the life-stage label (when “senior” starts). Your pet’s name and age stay in this browser only.
