What size crate for my dog?

Measure your dog and get a standard crate size (24–48 inch), or pick a puppy's breed to size for the grown dog with a divider panel. Saves on this device.

Unit

Length: tip of the nose to the base of the tail. Height: floor to the top of the head, with your dog standing. This tool adds 4in to each — the top of AKC's own 3–4in margin — before matching a size.

Margin and measuring method: AKC, "How to Choose the Best Crate for Your Dog". Standard sizes and breed/size tiers: MidWest Homes for Pets size/breed reference, one brand's own line — another brand's crate of the same nominal size can differ by an inch or two. Estimate only, not a fitting.

Crate sized — now a calmer first night

A correctly sized crate is the part a number can solve. Settling into it the first few nights isn't. Open Dog & Cat Translator Pro, speak or tap, and play a bark or meow back while your dog gets used to the new space. Entertainment only — it doesn't train or time crate sessions.

Why the measuring method matters more than the breed name

Breed is a starting point, not a fitting. Two dogs of the same breed can differ by several inches depending on sex and lineage — the breed/size chart above even says so in its own fine print. A tape measure on the actual dog in front of you beats a breed lookup every time; the AKC's measuring method — nose-to-tail length and standing height, plus 3 to 4 inches — is what the "Measure my dog" tab above runs.

For a puppy, the breed tab exists because you can't measure a dog that hasn't finished growing. It sizes for the breed's adult range and leans on the divider panel most crates ship with, per MidWest's own size/breed reference. One crate, moved in from the divider as the puppy fills it, instead of a new crate every few months.

Once your puppy's closer to grown, our puppy weight calculator projects adult weight from a current weigh-in, and the dog age calculator shows roughly where they sit on the growth curve by breed size.

Size sorted — keep the mood light

No app replaces a tape measure for a correct crate fit. Once the size is settled, open Dog & Cat Translator Pro and tap a playful reply instead of just closing the tab. Same entertainment toy either way — it plays sounds; it doesn't size or track a crate.

Frequently asked questions

Measure nose to the base of the tail for length, and floor to the top of the head (standing) for height. Per AKC's own guide, add 3 to 4 inches to each so your dog can stand, turn around, and lie flat without touching the sides. Match that to the smallest standard size — 24, 30, 36, 42, or 48 inches — that clears both numbers. The calculator above does this automatically.
