Will your dog answer to it?

Nothing you pick leaves this page — the filters, the shortlist and the share link all run in your browser. The “Easy to call” tag marks names of one or two syllables that end in a vowel and don’t rhyme with a training cue; the warning on a card names the cue it clashes with. Both are spelling checks you can see for yourself, not claims about what your dog hears.

Why so many dogs get German names

Because so many breeds are German. The German shepherd, dachshund, rottweiler, dobermann, boxer, weimaraner, schnauzer, great dane as the Germans know it, and the whole spitz family were all developed there. Giving the dog a name from its own country of origin is the single most common reason people land on this list.

The practical picks split in two. Blunt nouns — Blitz (lightning), Donner (thunder), Jäger (hunter), Falke (falcon), Kaiser (emperor) — read as working names. Short forms of people's names — Fritz from Friedrich, Hans from Johannes, Greta from Margareta, Heidi from Adelheid, Lotte from Charlotte — read as household names.

Two words worth getting right

"Schatzi" is a diminutive of Schatz, treasure, and is used in German the way English uses "sweetheart". It is affectionate, not grand.

"Dackel" is simply the everyday German word for a dachshund — so naming a dachshund Dackel is the same joke as naming a dog Dog, which is why it is in the funny tag as well. "Spitz" means pointed, and is the word behind the whole pointy-eared breed family rather than a name in its own right.
